With India facing a rise in COVID-19 infections, we know that the best thing to do is to stay safe in the warm embrace of our homes. This, being our second spell indoors, most of us have already watched the most popular documentaries shows on Netflix - from Money Heist to Breaking Bad and Schitts Creek to Stranger Things.

Still, many evenings spent lounging on our beds watching Netflix are on the cards, so we’ve rounded up some interesting docu-series that you’re bound to love!

David Attenborough: A Life on our Planet

The documentary follows David Attenborough as he witnesses the marvels of nature. In his 93 years, he has visited every continent on the globe, exploring the wild places of our planet and painstakingly documenting every aspect of the living world in all its glory. Now, for the first time, he reflects upon the devastating changes he has seen to the variety and wonder of our planet. It is an honest, revealing and urgent first-hand documentation of humanities’ impact on nature and a message of hope for generations to come.

The Game Changers

The Game Changers is a documentary that follows the story of James Wilks who is an elite Special Forces trainer and winner of The Ultimate Fighter. It documents the explosive rise of plant-based eating seen in professional sports. Wilks travels across the world on a quest, searching for the truth about meat, protein, and strength. The film features real athletes, some of which, are the strongest, fastest and toughest on the planet. It features their struggles and triumphs through their journeys. Wilks' journey exposes outdated myths about food that not only affect human performance but the health of the entire global population. The film is executive produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan.

Seaspiracy

This documentary highlights the human impacts on marine life such as plastic marine debris, ghost nets and overfishing around the world. It talks about the impact commercial fisheries have on the destruction of the marine ecosystem. Seaspiracy rejects the concept of sustainable fishing, criticises several marine conservation organisations and the efforts by organisations to reduce household plastic given the impact of ghost nets. It accuses these initiatives of being a cover-up for the environmental impact of fishing and corruption in the fishing industry, hence the title of the documentary. The film advocates for marine reserves and the elimination of fish consumption. The documentary also covers the Taiji dolphin drive hunt, whaling in the Faroe Islands, and modern slavery within the fishing industry in Thailand.

The Truth About Alcohol

Dr Javid Abdelmoneim is a physician who has seen a fair share of alcohol-related problems at work. He goes on a quest to find out what the effect consuming alcohol truly does have on humans and documents his journey. He gets measured to see if his alcohol consumption in a typical week in his life has thus far affected the health of his liver. He conducts various experiments and tests to try and further his understanding. He tries to answer the question of why certain people get intoxicated faster than others, whether alcohol affects potential weight gain beyond the calories already present in alcohol and more.

Chasing Coral

It is a well-known fact that coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. If you weren’t aware of this fact, the documentary presents the evidence with beauty, intelligence and emotion. It takes us on a journey as we witness how divers, photographers and scientists set out on an ocean adventure to discover why the reefs are disappearing. The mystery is soon revealed to us, as in all too many ecological crises, the culprit is global warming. As oceans have heated some two degrees and become more acidic as a result, corals are dying. “Chasing Coral” is aimed at alerting the world to this crisis and highlighting the importance of corals many don’t realize.

Minimalism- A Documentary About the Important Things

This documentary follows “The Minimalists” Millburn and Nicodemus, as they meet other people who are venturing through life searching for meaning through simplicity. These people include scientists, as they psychologically examine the human obsession of constantly wanting more and never being satisfied; an architect who believes in designing homes to fit our lives as opposed to the other way around; a journalist, a world traveller, authors and other fascinating people with interesting stories and strategies on a minimalistic way of living. The documentary is an inspiring and emotional rollercoaster as it also explores the tragic childhoods of the Minimalists. The documentary makes you realize the simplicity and beauty of life.
