How to Create a Welcoming Bathroom

By sanjit Posted 04-06-2021 Architecture

Bathrooms are where most people begin and end their day. They provide a brief moment of solitude as well as a relaxing place to unwind from the stresses of the day with a hot shower or a warm bath. The bathroom, in this case, becomes much more than just another room in the house; it becomes a haven. Yet, often we don’t spend a lot of time planning the layout and design of the room. This could often result in the bathroom looking cold and out-of-date.

Therefore, it is advised that to create this haven you need to find a balance that is somewhere between modern minimalist masterpieces and cosy country design. This helps add a cool and modern feel to it while also keeping it warm and welcoming. Here are a few suggestions on how to create a welcoming bathroom.

Brighten up the Room

Dark bathrooms, when done wrong, can appear dingy and depressing, whereas bright, clean bathrooms are refreshing and relaxing. You can open the blinds and let some natural light in if your bathroom has windows. You can also add light-coloured drapes for privacy while still allowing light in and preventing people from seeing inside. Clean the light fixtures and, if necessary, replace the bulbs.

Even adding an extra floor lamp if you have enough space to do so, can make a big difference. However, ensure that the lamp wires are not in your way and that of water to avoid any accidents. Sprucing up your bathroom vanity with light bulbs placed systematically at its border is also another great idea to brighten up your space.

Incorporating Stone Tiles

Tiles are an important part of any bathroom's design. Stone tiles are the most ideal options as they come in a variety of colours, designs and textures that adds to the welcoming, yet earthy look of your bathroom. They are both beautiful to look at, and satisfying to touch and walk on. You can incorporate some stone into the design, either as a single material or as a contrast to other porcelain tiles. This will add a lot of richness to the palette and a sense of sophistication.

Even if you do not tile all of the wall surfaces, at least one area is tiled floor to ceiling, while leaving the other walls bare can make a big difference. This gives the room a finished appearance, with the contrast between the tiled and bare walls appearing intentional.

Choosing the Right Colour Palette

It is vital to achieve balance to make a bathroom feel inviting, airy yet warm, contemporary and clean. Using a lot of white or crisp off-white will make the room feel larger and provide a pleasing contrast to the warm elements. It's important to remember that not every element needs to be visually warm for the overall effect to feel warm. Subdued grey and grey-beige shades ground the space and bridge the warmest and coolest elements, making these colours an excellent choice for any modern bathroom. This also aids in achieving a balance of traditional and contemporary elements.

Additionally, you can also play around with your shower curtains. You can change your curtains every week and choose fun patterns and colours that go with the rest of the colour scheme. For example, choosing a bright red-themed curtain to match your subdued grey walls could immediately make your space look more lively and stylish!

Ensure Your Bathroom Smells Fragrant

A musty-smelling bathroom is unappealing. A few days of accumulated humidity can cause a bathroom to smell musty. You can avoid this by airing the room occasionally and using air fresheners. Additionally, candles are also an excellent way to mask unpleasant odours, and they are far less artificial than sprays. However, use caution while using a live flame in your bathroom and avoid keeping it near curtains, deodorants, and other flammables. You can also use some incense sticks to achieve similar results.

If you wish to avoid live flames altogether, using a reed diffuser can also subtly improve the smell of a room without the need to light or spray them. Simply store your reed bottle somewhere out of the way, as the oil can be toxic to the skin.

Add Fresh Flowers and Plants

Nothing makes a space more welcoming than a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers or even potted plants. These can add style to your bathroom as well. Fresh flowers are not ideal for daily use but perhaps buying some before the arrival of guests could make them feel special and welcome. White and pastels are the most calming and widely used choice, but you can also experiment with more colour if it suits the space. If you know what your visitors' favourite flowers are, this could be a good option as well.

For more permanent use, you can incorporate a “shower plant” into your bathroom. These plants do not require to be watered as the daily habit of showering will help your bathroom plants thrive. It is also a great way to conserve water. Studies have shown that these plants can improve the air quality in the bathroom, boost your energy and even add a calming effect to the space.
