There is a reverently tranquil side to Goa. You can see this in the array of striking churches built in various parts of the state. These churches are undeniable architectural landmarks that you can immerse yourself into when looking to discover the indigenous treasures of Goa.

Whether you are a first-time visitor to Goa or are a frequent traveler looking for insights into history or architecture, some of these churches should definitely be on your itinerary.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral

The Basilica of Bom Jesus, built by the Jesuits, is a major part of Goa’s architectural history. It houses the relics of St. Francis Xavier and reflects the glorious past of the Portuguese empire in Asia. Constructed in 1594, it represents the evolution of Baroque-style architecture in Goa. Its layout conforms to simple Renaissance norms. It is near Velha Goa and is a 15 mins drive from Panjim. If you walk a little further from the Basilica of Bom Jesus, you discover the Se Cathedral. It was constructed in 1510 and encompasses a Portuguese-Manueline architectural style. While the interiors possess a Corinthian appeal, its exteriors showcase Tuscan-style architecture. The Cathedral’s tower houses a Golden Bell, touted to be the largest bell in Goa.

St. Anne’s Church

St. Anne’s Church, Parra, was set up between 1650 and 1653. It was burnt down by the Marathas in 1683 and later on rebuilt in 1688. The church exhibits a magnificent portico that comes with an Indo-Portuguese style blend of architecture. There are steps at the front which lead to a facade that is worth taking a look at. Its interiors consist of gold-painted alters. There is exquisite art that you can get a glimpse of as you pass through the corridors. If you are taking the Calangute-Mapusa road, it is a 12 mins drive to St. Anne’s Church.

Mae De Deus Church

Constructed in 1873, the Mae De Deus Church in Saligao is one of the finest examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in Goa. Its pristine white walls are supported by massive buttresses which are surmounted by tapering spires. The main portal of the church is dome-shaped and is a full-story high. It makes for an enchanting sight when it is lit up at night. It takes around 10 mins via Chogm Road to reach the church if you are heading from Calangute.

Immaculate Conception Church

The Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church in Panjim is easy to locate. This is particularly true owing to its distinctive exterior that comes with double flights of steps that zigzag across the hillside where it is constructed. While it was originally set up as a chapel in 1541, it was rebuilt into the church it is today in 1619. Its architecture reflects Portuguese-Baroque and Goan styles. It can be witnessed even from an impressive distance owing to its two towers and tall belfry. It is a 30 mins drive from Mapusa to the church. It is also a 14-minute drive to Kasu Zira in Reis Magos, one of the finest luxury real estate properties in Goa.

St. Alex Church

Situated in Curtorim, Salcete, St Alex Church was first constructed in 1597. It was later reconstructed into a bigger structure in 1647. It has a contemporary 18th Century styled design. The walls of the church are made from red laterite while its column details look similar to the ones in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Margao. Overall, the church is a mere 15 mins drive from Margao.

Church of Our Lady of Penha de Franca

The Church of Our Lady of Penha de France in Britona was initially constructed in 1626. Later on, it was rebuilt in 1932. Its high-vaulted ceiling, intricately designed interiors, and simple reredos (a large ornamental screen that covers the back of the altar) lend the church an elegant charm. Located on a hillock, you can witness picturesque views of the Mandovi River and Chorao Island. Heading to this church from Panjim is approximately a 16 mins drive.

Holy Spirit Church

The Holy Spirit Church in Margao was built in 1564 and subsequently renovated in 1645. It showcases Indian baroque-style architecture with finely decorated interiors. You can notice the elegant simplicity of the church by the outer, pristine white facade, towers on either side, and a central dome structure. It’s a one-hour drive to the church from Panjim.
