One of the best and most sustainable ways to maximize light in your luxury apartment is by incorporating architectural and interior designs that explore ‘daylighting’. This is a means of reduced energy consumption by strategically admitting natural light, diffused skylight and direct sunlight in an architectural structure. Natural light, or sunshine, offers several health and wellness advantages. It is the primary source of Vitamin D, which is essential for your health. Furthermore, natural light improves your mood, sleep quality, and vision.
In contrast to living in a dark and melancholy environment, living in a brilliantly lit place is said to add more happiness and vitality to your life. Additionally, a well-ventilated and airy space uses less artificial lighting, so you may leave the lights on for extended periods. At Kasu Homes, our focus is to provide well lit and sustainable options of living. Our large windows and doors in all our villas and apartments at Kasu Vana, Kasu Zama and Kasu Zira are all put in place for this very reason. If you are looking to maximize natural light in your luxury apartment, then here are a few tips.
Many times, certain remote positions among trees and other barriers may cause apartments to not receive an appropriate amount of natural light. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly plan the layout of your garden if you can, or opt for an apartment that is not being barricaded by a variety of obstacles such as trees, walls and other buildings. Additionally, if you have a garden outside your windows, trim it in a way that won't let it block sunlight from entering your apartment. Our forest villas in Assagao are planned in such a way that we have ensured a wide green cover of trees surrounding our villas, with a wide garden in front of the house. You can also enjoy plenty of sunlight seeping through the trees that can instantly brighten up your entire home.
Selecting warm neutral colours for the walls of your apartment creates an illusion of space and bounces off natural light in the room, making it appear brighter. We suggest using paints with a satin finish, however, if the glare of reflecting light is not for you, the same effect can be created with a matte finish. Using lighter colours such as white and other light pastel colours such as sky blue, light azure and creamy mint can also add on to the illusion of a bigger and brighter space with minimal glare.
Investing in high-security, bi-folding or glass sliding doors and windows is a great way to ventilate your apartment whilst simultaneously letting the light in, such as our villas at Kasu Vana and Kasu Zama. They are fitted with large glass sliding doors that allow in plenty of light and ventilation as well. That being said, make sure that your windows are clean as that can significantly impact the amount of light entering your home. If bi-folding and sliding doors are out of reach, painting the window trims white creates an illusion of a larger, brighter window. Adding a ceiling light is also an innovative way of lighting up an apartment when the sun sets and there is a lack of natural light.
Opting for natural materials such as light coloured wood, ceramic or stone flooring, that has a polished finish makes the room look naturally brighter. Likewise, glossy, white ceilings, or ceilings that are reflective of the colour of the sky, helps the light bounce around the room better, maximising the light in your apartment.
Light reflective furniture, like reflective coffee tables and showcases with acrylic accents, bounces off light in a room. Similarly, Furniture with mirrored accents or glass panels makes fantastic reflective surfaces. The placement of furniture is also crucial to ensure natural light is not being blocked in any way, shape or form. Moving furniture away from the windows steers unnecessary shadows away, and prevents the blockage of light from entering the apartment. Bookshelves placed perpendicular to a window create a similar effect. Read our blog on how to choose furniture for your new home for more information.
Hanging plenty of mirrors around the apartment is a great, tried and tested way of brightening up any room. Embracing the ‘metallic’ aesthetic can also achieve a similar outcome as mirrors do. Playing around with curtains and blinds- leaning toward lighter, neutral blinds can elevate the light in a room tenfold. Bright coloured rugs and artwork can also brighten up darker rooms. We live in a day and age where the use of electricity is a necessity. However, by understanding the implications it has on our health and the environment, we can choose to use it diligently. Using artificial light to supplement natural light instead of replacing it can go a long way in giving your home a luxurious feel, while also conserving energy.
